Former Roma playmaker Hidetoshi Nakata was a catalyst in the growth of football in Japan, despite deciding to retire before his 30th birthday. The midfielder enjoyed a hugely successful career in Italy whilst also spending a brief spell in the Premier League . Nakata began his professional career in 1995 when he was 18, joining J1 League side Bellmare Hiratsuka. His performances quickly earned him suitors around Europe, with Serie A side Perugia striking a deal for his services worth £3.1million. He earned his third Ballon d’Or nomination of his career in 2001 during that campaign – having previously been nominated in 1998 and 1999.
