Space dreamsAfter Dwight’s burst of fame in the 1960s, his experience as the first Black astronaut candidate was for decades largely forgotten. During the early 1960s, as the space race with Russia was under way, the Kennedy administration pushed for minorities to become part of the space program, said Steven Moss, who with Richard Paul wrote “We Could Not Fail: The First African Americans in the Space Program." Bringing a Black person into the space program was seen as good public relations for the Kennedy administration at the time, Moss said. It also features Bernard Harris, the first Black astronaut to walk in space.
