Recently, at the annual Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit, US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping agreed that decisions regarding the use of nuclear weapons should rest with humans, not artificial intelligence. The leaders also stressed the importance of carefully assessing the risks tied to the development of military artificial intelligence technology, asserting that such advancements must be approached with “wisdom and responsibility.”This marks the first instance of a joint statement from the two nations addressing artificial intelligence and its military implications. How can such unregulated intelligence control not only the lives of billions of people and the Earth itself but also the entire solar system we inhabit? The open letter is the latest to raise safety concerns regarding rapidly evolving generative artificial intelligence technology, advancing at an astonishing pace and a low cost.
