KUALA TERENGGANU: There is plenty of Merdeka cheer for Terengganu’s 843 self-employed drivers of taxis, airport limousines and hired cars today. Terengganu Socso director Nora Yaacob said E-hailing service drivers for apps such as Uber and Grab could also register for Socso coverage. Nora said efforts are being made for other self-employed workers – such as fishermen, farmers, trishaw riders, petty traders and service providers – to also be covered by Socso. There are also 7,991 workers who are entitled to Socso pensions, from the 112,696 Socso contributors in the country (of which 8,373 are in Terengganu). The government is making a one-off contribution of RM60 million to the taxi drivers’ Socso scheme.
