But tyranny is smashing its way across a great deal of human terrain today, nonetheless, and it is creeping quietly through the liberal world order that the triumphs of the Second World War established. That’s more than twice the number of Canadian soldiers killed — 158 — over the entire duration of the Canadian Forces’ engagement in Afghanistan, from October 2001 to March 2014. The Canadian soldiers who rushed ashore at Juno Beach were all volunteers. Two years earlier, Canadian soldiers had been at the forefront of the tragically unsuccessful Allied attempt at gaining a European foothold at Dieppe. More than a million Canadians — one in 10 Canadians at the time — volunteered for military service during the Second World War.
