Hyderabad, Jan. 17: Tension crackled outside the University of Hyderabad gates today as students demanded that Rohith Vemula's mother and others be allowed on campus to take part in programmes marking the PhD student's first death anniversary. The university cannot provide a platform for outsiders to participate in activities organised by insiders or outsiders when there was no permission," varsity registrar P.S. Podile had said a few days ago that some memorial meetings for Rohith could be organised "but we are not expecting any trouble". Late this evening, Radhika and Raja, the brother of Rohith, and some students were shifted away from the protest site. Last evening, joint action committee representatives, led by the Ambedkar Students' Association with which Rohith was associated, took out a torch rally on campus from the shopping complex where a Rohith Smarak (a stone plaque) stands.
