Court battle over dog menace

New Delhi, Jan. 17: Animal rights activists today told the Supreme Court vigilante squads in Kerala were still going about eliminating stray dogs despite a court injunction that put a leash on such indiscriminate killings. Justice Misra said the court had already asked Maveli to appear in person before it on March 1 and would pass appropriate orders when he does. According to one estimate, Kerala has nearly 2.7 lakh stray dogs. Additional solicitor general Pinky Anand said the central government was keen on striking a balance between human lives and the right of stray dogs to coexist in society. But for this we can't say destroy all stray dogs."
