Tenancy evictions can begin again next week

New Zealand's freeze on rental property evictions will end next week, but the Government is providing more support to those who have fallen behind in rent. On March 24, before New Zealand went into level 4 lockdown, the Government introduced emergency changes to protect tenants. The Government has extended this using Covid-19 Response and Recovery Funds to double the amount of rent arrears assistance people can receive and making it easier for people to apply. “People may have accumulated rent arrears due to a temporary change in their income under the impacts of Covid-19. Bindi Norwell, chief executive of the Real Estate Institute, welcomed the end of the eviction freeze.
