Huawei deputy chairman and rotating chief executive officer Eric Xu said the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) has proposed to release a simplified version of the 5G network for certain countries. It provides members with a stable environment to produce reports and specifications that define 3GPP technologies. The project covers cellular telecommunication network technologies, including radio access, core transport network and service capabilities — including work on codecs, security, quality of service — to provide complete system specifications. Citing 3GPP, Xu said the full 5G standard is expected to be launched by 2019, and that Huawei is aiming to commercialise its 5G cellular network by 2020. This year, Xu said Huawei will be investing heavily in the cloud business unit, as Huawei is determined to build an open and trusted public cloud platform.
