Days before the crash, he’d been discharged from the Youth Court for offences including drink-driving and excessive speed – including passing a car at 163kph. The court heard the teen driver had only a learner licence. He noted the driver had the support of his family and apologised to the victims’ family, but some believed the apology was not genuine. The teen was self-centred, and remained at high risk of reoffending, the judge said in ruling the case was “too serious” to remain with the Youth Court.
