Road safety campaigners have called on the Government to copy technology in use in Britain which helps police detect those who use mobile phones while driving. The mobile phone detectors are enabled to pick up phone signals and use electronic, roadside variable messages to flash an alert to motorists in cars who are using phones to call, text or use data. She revealed that Parc had lobbied Minister for Transport Shane Ross to double the penalty for drivers using hand-held mobile phones while driving. Ms Gray said the information from mobile phones was vital in establishing what happened in a crash and whether the widespread use of hand-held mobile phones by drivers was a likely factor in a crash. The Road Safety Authority said it could not comment until it had gathered information on the technology.
