Historically, the NHS has gained much from partnering with researchers, charities and the life sciences industry to improve the health of people in the UK. Who would have expected that, by working together, we could reduce cardiovascular mortality by 70 per cent over the last 30 years, advance new treatments for many chronic diseases, develop therapies that have halted the progress or cured HIV and Hepatitis C, and had a significant impact on cancer prognosis? Remarkably, we have added almost a decade to life expectancy in this country.
