Expanding beyond Britain’s shores can be an intimidating prospect for owners of small businesses. But get it right and there are rich rewards on offer — and the government is desperate to help. British businesses currently send goods and services abroad worth £550bn every year, and the government has a long-held ambition to double that by 2020. Looking beyond Europe is essential, especially after Brexit, said Caroline Dent, a partner at the private equity firm ECI. While the EU will remain Britain’s largest trading partner, Dent said businesses should “think about smaller emerging economies as well”.
