The biggest name in British slapstick is taking his ENO Iolanthe pretty seriously


When Nicholas Hytner needed to punch up the laughs in his National Theatre production of One Man, Two Guvnors, he called in Cal McCrystal to direct the slapstick. When Paul King was directing Paddington and Paddington 2, he turned to McCrystal to do the same. When Andrew Garfield worried that Spider-Man needed more humour, he appealed to his friendly neighbourhood McCrystal. The only people who’ve been called more often than McCrystal are the Ghostbusters. Fortunately, the syllable count is the same, so the song works either way.
