A preliminary investigation revealed that the taxi had overshot the traffic signal a split second before it hit the pedestrian. "Prima facie, it appears that the taxi driver was at fault. The signal had turned red when he sped past the stop-line and hit the woman," said an officer at Taltala police station. Penalties for signal violation in Calcutta are still largely dependent on manual citing. At the Moulali-AJC Bose Road crossing, listed among the 75 most dangerous ones in Calcutta for pedestrians, a vehicle jumping a signal means an immediate threat to someone's life.
