Tax: Distressed Kenyan firms find safe haven in Mauritius


Troubled Tuskys Supermarket is now among a growing list of Kenyan firms with links to one of the world’s most notorious tax havens. The Mauritius links, which lessen firms’ tax burdens, have raised concerns of an uneven playing field where local tax compliant businesses are forced to operate under unfair competition. Of the top three Kenyan supermarket chains, only Naivas is yet to have links to Mauritius. He noted that Kenyan firms in the “Fire” economy, which refers to finance, insurance and real estate, are moving there. Kenyan firms that have been identified by TJNA as having such links include Centum, Britam and Jubilee Insurance.?
