Max Spence served as chairman of the Nelson Bays Rugby Union between 1996 and 2005 and was named the first life member of the Tasman Rugby Union. A Nelson rugby stalwart and the man credited with bringing the Mako to life is now one of New Zealand's highest-ranking rugby officers. Former Tasman Rugby Union chairman Max Spence was elected vice-president of NZ Rugby at the organisation's annual general meeting this week. Tasman Rugby Union chief executive Tony Lewis said from a union perspective, it was pleasing to have someone from an administration side on the national stage.
