High sea bacteria levels at Ngāmotu Beach, New Plymouth, saw it close to the public on Saturday. (File photo)An international triathlon's swimming events went ahead as planned on Sunday, despite high bacterial levels in the sea disrupting the previous day's activities. The ITU Triathlon World Cup has been running in New Plymouth since Friday, but was disrupted on Saturday due to a high bacteria reading on the eastern side of Ngāmotu Beach. Triathlon media manager Andrew Dewhurst said this saw the beach be closed and resulted in the cancellation of the kids' swim on Saturday. McLay said the cause of the high bacteria reading was grain spores getting into the sea.
