Blockhouse Bay United video owner Vinay Rajput had to close his store due to the likes of online streaming and Netflix’s taking away his customers. However, with the rise of online streaming and entertainment subscription websites like Netflix, video stores are shutting up shop. As video stores become part of a bygone era, DVDs and Blu-ray have moved away from mainstream audiences and are now being bought by a smaller, niche group. Dr Ian Huffer, senior lecturer at Massey University's school of English and Media Studies, said he is fortunate to have a United Video in Palmerston North, niche stores in Wellington and streaming sites like Netflix. With video stores, the certainty of having movies and being able to purchase them at a good price had an appeal for some people, he said.
