A $65 million Taranaki clean-energy project was one of seven winners at the Primary Industries New Zealand Awards 2021. The innovation and collaboration accolade at Tuesday's Christchurch awards night went to Ballance Agri-Nutrients and Hiringa Energy for their investment in four wind turbines. The wind generation, along with hydrogen energy, will replace natural gas in the production of urea at Ballance’s Kapuni site, reducing the company’s scope 1 carbon emissions by 90 per cent. “Their world-first green hydrogen project in Taranaki, at Ballance’s existing Kapuni fertiliser plant, displays innovation, their ability to work collaboratively, and commitment to meeting New Zealand’s energy and food-growing needs, while focussing on net zero carbon emissions by 2050. “Taranaki continues to excel in energy, and will continue to do so as we transition towards a low-emissions future with bright minds and innovative and collaborative organisations leading the way.”
