Taranaki school claims to be home of the country's top performing female athletes HELEN HARVEYDOMINICO ZAPATA/STUFF Zoe Hobbs is one of many top performing Kiwi athletes who went to New Plymouth Girls' High School in Taranaki. The one thing all these top female athletes have in common is that they went to New Plymouth Girls' High School (NPGHS). I was talking to a 13-year-old who wants to play for the national women's rugby team. She wasn't solely focussed on athletics while she was at high school, deciding in Year 13 to choose athletics, she said. Sport Taranaki chief executive Howie Tamati, who played for the Kiwis from 1979 and 1985, said the region was "blessed" by people who have gone before, giving back to the sport they love.
