Star reporter Tanya Talaga has chosen Alicia Elliott as the winner of the 2018 RBC Taylor Emerging Writer Award. The honour comes with a $10,000 cash prize and a mentorship by Talaga, who herself won the 2018 RBC Taylor prize for her book Seven Fallen Feathers: Racism, Death and Hard Truths in a Northern City. Part of the responsibility of winning the prize is to choose the winner of the Emerging Writer Award and to mentor that writer. She is lyrical, heart-felt and she tells searing truths of Canada today, truths we all need to listen to,” Talaga said about her choice. Elliott, a Tuscarora writer who lives in Brantford, Ont., is widely seen as a rising star.
