Tampa Bay Rays' plan to play half-season in Montreal is dead: Report

The Tampa Bay Rays’ bid to split the season between the Tampa Bay area and Montreal by 2024 is dead, according to St. Petersburg, Fla., Mayor Rick Kriseman, the Tampa Bay Times reported on Wednesday. “Both parties have agreed that the best path forward is to abide by the existing use agreement,” Kriseman wrote in a memo to city council. The team’s desire, said principal-owner Stu Sternberg at the time, was to have the arrangement in place in time for the 2024 season, the Tampa Bay Times reported. But the team is contractually obligated to play all their home games at Tropicana Field through the 2027 season, and are forbidden from negotiating to play elsewhere through the end of the contract term. That means the team would have needed permission from St. Petersburg leaders to explore that possibility.
