Singh's promise to convene a meeting within a fortnight, sources said, provided Gurung with the reason to announce the decision to lift the strike. "We have decided to keep the hills open from 6am tomorrow," Gurung told The Telegraph in the evening. Gurung said the sacrifices made by "11 martyrs" had brought the Centre to the talks table, adding that the strike was being withdrawn because the Morcha was going to the tripartite meeting. "Eleven people have been martyred for the land, for the community and it is because of their sacrifices that the Union home minister has thought of sitting for talks. We are now going for talks because of the sacrifices of our martyrs.... We are suspending the strike from tomorrow to go for talks and will wait for the outcome of the talks," Gurung said.
