Although the bill was Wednesday's unfinished business, the government gave precedence to the GST amendment bill, listing it as the first bill to be taken up for discussion on Thursday. For the past two days, the BJP has been telling reporters that Shah would make his maiden speech during the discussion on the GST bill. However, when Rajya Sabha deputy chairman P.J. Kurien moved to take up the GST bill after an acrimonious debate over the demand for a vote on the motions admitted for referring the talaq bill to a select committee, the Opposition rose in one voice to force an adjournment for the day. But the talaq bill will remain pending, giving the BJP a chance to attack the Opposition, particularly the Congress.
