But we've also taken another sort of safari, among the sprawling savannas of Tanzania--and in its own, distinct way, it was fascinating, too. These are in wide open spaces, and, if you're lucky, where herds move in their inexorable path looking for food. I’ll think of the luxury tents as part of our Abercrombie & Kent excursion--aptly named Tanzania Safari in Style ( ). But for me, the defining moment was at the Ngorongoro Crater cultural site, where we spent an afternoon among a Masai tribe. Once we were inside the Masai world, we were swept up into the culture and the moment and the immediacy of their lives.
