Taiwan ties with US for top spot at chemistry competition, beating out China and over 70 other countries

TAIPEI, Taiwan — Taiwan has shared first place with the U.S. in an international chemistry competition for high school students. Both countries picked up four gold medals in this year's International Chemistry Olympiad, putting them at the top of the medal tally. It was a particularly well-earned victory considering the event's scale, with 298 entrants from 76 countries participating. In the competition, held this year in Nakhon Pathom, Thailand, countries send four-student delegations to compete in two examinations — one theoretical and one practical — covering various subfields of chemistry. Taiwan's Fang Tung-hua, Lin Wei-yu, Yuan Chung-yueh and Yeh Yuan-chen each picked up a gold medal, putting the country in top place along with the U.S.
