Yet, the Samajwadis and the BSP supported her, as did the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party. Two powerful local political families - the Hasans and the Singhs - fought the bypoll, necessitated by the death of BJP lawmaker Hukum Singh. He said Tabassum's brother-in-law was the local MLA and other members from the two families held sway over the urban local bodies.
