TTC officers are collecting personal information from an increasing number of transit users each year, according to an ongoing Star investigation. Numbers provided by the TTC show fare inspectors and enforcement officers completed more than 10,000 “field information” cards in the first 11 months of 2018. In 2011, TTC enforcement officers lost their special constable status, which had granted them limited police powers through an agreement with the Toronto Police Services Board. The collection of the data and the overrepresentation of Black residents in the statistics has led some experts to say the TTC’s use of field information cards raises concerns about privacy and potential racial profiling.
