High number of Indigenous people incarcerated concerning but not surprising, says Nunatsiavut Government

“I find it's very concerning, but it's also not new news to us,” Nunatsiavut Government regional justice services manager Erin Broomfield told CBC Radio’s Labrador Morning. According to the study, Labrador Correctional Centre (LCC) in Happy Valley-Goose Bay had the highest proportion of Indigenous inmates, at 88.5 per cent. “I guess with the high numbers in the Labrador Correctional Centre, it's a bit hard to extend support to other provincial facilities. It shows Indigenous people in Newfoundland and Labrador are incarcerated at much higher rates. Nunatsiavut Government regional justice services manager Erin Broomfield explains what the data shows and how Nunatsiavut is responding.
