“Credibility is acceptability,” said Trinamul’s Rajya Sabha leader Derek O’Brien on Tuesday while maintaining that his party had not been invited to Pawar’s meeting. Trinamul will, however, attend the meeting of Opposition parties called by UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi on February 1 in her capacity as leader of the Congress Parliamentary Party. Asked who was best suited to lead the proposed front, O’Brien refused to specify but maintained it was only natural that someone with impeccable credentials alone could play the lead role in 2019. This is not the first time O’Brien has made out a case for Trinamul taking the lead. Although Sonia remains UPA chairperson and Congress Parliamentary Party leader, the question that remains open is whether she will continue in both positions after the term of this Lok Sabha.
