As it increases class sizes, the Ontario government expects to trim about 3,500 teaching positions. For example, a board with more teachers than needed could draw on the fund to keep those instructors and avoid layoffs. But last week, the Toronto District School Board warned high school teachers they could be “bumped” out of their current positions by colleagues with more seniority, or even laid off, because of provincial cutbacks. On Tuesday, Education Minister Lisa Thompson said that is a “local” situation and therefore not a proper use of the fund. Because those are averages, secondary school classes will end up much larger in order to offset smaller, specialized classes.
