Suspended police chief resigns in Bristol

By THOMAS P. CALDWELL, LACONIA DAILY SUNBRISTOL — Selectmen on Thursday announced the resignation of Bristol Police Chief Michael Lewis, whom they had placed on administrative leave a month earlier, on Sept. 5. That put him in conflict with the selectmen who initially objected to what they saw as negative publicity for the town. Lewis ran into another conflict with the selectmen when they wanted to see local representation at regional drug forums. Laconia attorney Matt Lahey filed suit against three officers from Bristol and four members of the Central New Hampshire Special Operations Unit, claiming they violated the family’s civil rights. The family ultimately lost its suit against the town and the special operations unit, but many residents were outraged at what they saw as an excessive show of force.
