A lawsuit against government-owned Southern Response could cost millions in earthquake insurance claims settlements. (Video first published in September 2018)The Supreme Court has made a “hugely significant” decision on earthquake repairs that could cost the Government many millions of dollars. The court has ruled that a class action by Canterbury policyholders against insurance company Southern Response can go ahead on an “opt-out” basis. The lawsuit claims Southern Response did not disclose full repair and rebuild costs in settlement negotiations, so homeowners were not aware of entitlements they could have received.
