NewsThe Supreme Court today (Sept 27) postponed doctor Mohamed Shafi's fundamental rights petition against his unlawful arrest until January 24, 2020. During today's hearing, the Attorney General's Department informed a two-member judge bench that it hopes to submit more documents to court in future. Dr. Shafi is facing allegations of sterilising women, illegally acquiring property, and maintaining liks to terrorism - charges which the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) cited lack of evidence. The petitioner has sought a Supreme Court order declaring that his arrest and detention had been unlawful. Dr Shafi, attached to the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital, had been granted bail in July by the Kurunegala Magistrate's Court.
