Suppression lifts on Canterbury grave plaque thief

War veteran plaques were stolen from graves at the Springston Cemetery in Lincoln, between April 25 and May 9. (File photo)Name suppression has lifted on a Christchurch woman who pleaded guilty last month to stealing 37 war veteran plaques from Springston Cemetery. The woman, Gail Maree Wickes, has also now admitted earlier offending, at a video-link appearance in the Christchurch District Court on Monday. Police said Wilkes removed the grave plaques with a chisel to get cash to buy methamphetamine. Police retrieved the plaques from scrap dealers, who had tipped them off about the theft, but the items had been defaced and the names were removed.
