In March, Mr. Obama celebrated Mr. Trudeau during a state visit to Washington that felt at times like a passing of the torch. Mr. Trudeau described the United States and Canada as “siblings,” while Mr. Obama joked about his younger guest’s having once worked as a bouncer. The possibility that Mr. Trump could succeed Mr. Obama is likely to be a topic of concern as well. “He campaigned on a message of hope and of change; his positive and optimistic vision is inspiring young people,” Mr. Obama said of Mr. Trudeau at a news conference in the Rose Garden. But Mr. Trudeau has taken a very different line, recommitting Canada to legislative efforts to combat climate change, much as Mr. Obama did when he succeeded George W. Bush in 2009.
