more-inEmployees of Thiru Arooran Sugar Mills in Thanjavur district are on a relay-fast demanding disbursement of salary due to them since April this year. Workers in groups have been observing the relay fast in front of the factory at Tirumandankudi village near Kabisthalam from October 1 onwards. The sugar mill which employs 250 workers and had sold sugar to the tune of ₹ 33 crore after crushing about 1.23 lakh of cane during the current season from February to May, said P. Ganesamurthy, general secretary of the National Workers Union, affiliated to the INTUC. The company has not remitted even the Provident Fund amount of workers, he alleged and claimed that the company’s also owed dues to the cane growers to the tune of about ₹ 40 crore. Five workers fell unconscious and were admitted to GH in Kumbakonam over the past few days, he added.
