The shared-equity scheme was first approved by the council in early 2017, after Cr Vicki Buck spent three years developing it. The New Zealand government ran a pilot for its own shared-equity scheme for home buyers in 2008, but it was short-lived. Habitat for Humanity Christchurch spokesman Peter Judd said the scheme would be "a fantastic thing for these individuals and our city as a whole".
