KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri T. Subromaniam's appointment as Customs Department director-general shows that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak is a person who values fairness and meritocracy. Gerakan vice-president Datuk A. Kohilan Pillay, in praising the government's effort to protect and promote the interests of all Malaysians, said it was "admirable" that Najib had stood firm on Subromaniam's appointment despite receiving petitions against it. "Clearly, democratic values and principles including meritocracy have been substituted with partisan interests in their pursuit of power and status." Najib had defended the appointment of Subromaniam, saying he was the most qualified senior officer in the department. In his speech at MIC's general assembly on Sunday, Najib said he stood his ground in Subromaniam's appointment, despite receiving petitions against it.
