The students were participating in a Jan. 13 kick-off assembly that ties into the already existing Cabrillo Kids Care Program themes of kindness, gratitude, compassion and mindfulness toward others. The school assembly set the stage for students to incorporate their responsibility theme on a global level. Through this cutting-edge program, students will see firsthand how the power of their actions can make a positive difference in communities near and far, and in their own lives. Julie Merrick, who teaches the children mindfulness, commented, “Programs like this put the children outside of themselves a little bit. “Helping our children develop compassion through global citizenship makes perfect sense in Malibu and at Juan Cabrillo Elementary, where we focus on caring.
