Shen has been under the microscope after he was revealed to be the Communist Party representative of his department at Tsinghua University. The group of 30 student representatives chanted slogans like “stop the vote”, “oppose to let Communist Party member take control of our school”. They said they wanted the appointments to be postponed until background investigations into the candidates were completed. A student representative of the university council, Daniel Lei, said he would raise a motion asking for the appointments to be delayed. President of the HKU student union, Edy Jeh, urged more students, teaching staff and alumni to join their protest, saying academic freedom and institutional autonomy are at stake.
