QUITO, ECUADOR—A strong earthquake has shaken the northwestern coastal area of Ecuador. The U.S. Geological Service says the quake was measured at magnitude 5.9 and it was centred about 41 kilometres south of Propicia. Some slight shaking was felt in Ecuador’s capital of Quito, which is 153 kilometres to the southeast. The tremor struck about 35 kilometres below the surface. Authorities say there are no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
