Strike by Bengali groups disrupts life in Chittagong Hill Tracts districts

These groups are demanding repeal of the CHT Land Dispute Resolution Commission (Amendment) Act, 2016 that came into effect on Aug 9. The five groups - Parbatya Nagarik Parishad, Parbatya Ganaparishad, Somo-Odhikar Andolon, Parbatya Bangali Chhatra Parishad and Parbatya Bangali Chhatra Oikya Parishad - have called the strike to prevent the first meeting of the CHT Land Dispute Resolution Commission after the amendment of the law. Speaking at a press conference on Saturday in Rangamati, leaders of these five groups alleged that a conspiracy was afoot to evict Bengalis settlers from the CHT by using the amended law. As a result of the strike, movement of transport has been affected in Rangamati, Khagrhachharhi and Bandarban districts. Rangamati Kotwali police OC Mohammed Rashid told bdnews24.com that strike supporters were picketing in the town.
