MetService is warning of thunderstorms, heavy rain and hail in eastern parts of Otago, including Dunedin, this afternoon. A weakening front is forecast to move across Fiordland this morning, bringing a period of rain to the area, together with a low risk of thunderstorms. Any thunderstorms that eventuated in these areas were expected to produce localised heavy rain of 10mm to 25mm per hour and hail of 10mm to 20mm (1 to 2cm) in diameter, he said. Inland parts of the South Island could expect showers this afternoon and this evening, especially about the ranges, with a broad low risk of isolated thunderstorms, he said. Conditions were expected to clear by the evening in most of the South.
