New Delhi, Oct. 6: The Centre has asked state school boards to stop artificially inflating their students' Class XII marks but continue to compensate them for ambiguous or extra-difficult questions and award grace marks to those falling just short of pass marks. "Multiple sets system" is a reference to some boards' practice of distributing different sets of question papers on the same subject as a shield against cheating. Like some other boards, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) often artificially inflates marks to retain near-parity in the pass percentage across years. The CBSE has already committed to ending marks inflation, and the other boards are expected to follow suit. Earlier, an inter-board committee set up by the government had recommended an end to artificial marks inflation.
