While 10 babies died in the past two days, a three-day-old died of birth asphyxia today. Health workers said the BJP-led government had discontinued schemes like Mamoni and Majoni schemes for pregnant women and neo-natal care introduced by the earlier Congress government. The government should give more emphasis on schemes like Mamoni to help pregnant women take care of their health. She, however, said pregnant women can get folic acid and iron tablets for free from government hospitals and health centres. It also asked for registration of pregnant women as soon as they conceive and periodic check-up and treatment during the entire period of pregnancy and labour.
