New Delhi, March 1: Dozens of teachers at St. Stephen's College are set to resign tomorrow from administrative posts they hold in protest against the institute's decision to embrace Delhi University's proposal to grant it autonomy without discussions with staff and students. The college staff association met today and unanimously passed a resolution that said staff members would register their protest by resigning from all voluntary administrative positions, such as advisers to student societies and members or conveners of various committees. Narain, who also heads the Delhi University Teachers' Association, said St Stephen's, set up in 1881 by Christian missionaries, had a proven record in providing high-quality education to diverse sections of society at a nominal fee. Principal John Varghese is alleged to have threatened two lady teacher representatives on the governing body after the meeting for their dissent. They said St. Stephen's was a constituent college of the university and breaking away would mean bypassing the DU Act and ordinances.
