Stephen Graham is one of Britain’s finest and busiest actors. He recently finished making a movie with Tom Hanks and will be appearing in a Martin Scorsese film with Robert De Niro and Al Pacino later this year. In The Virtues, the grimly gripping drama series on Channel 4, he gives a mesmerising performance as a middle-aged alcoholic father trying to untangle the truth about his dark past. Critics have lavished The Virtues with five-star reviews, calling Graham “brilliant”, “compelling” and “preternaturally gifted”. Graham does not usually read reviews, but his wife, the actress Hannah Walters, who reads and chooses his scripts because he is dyslexic, quoted them to him.
