Green Communities Canada, which runs the program Active and Safe Routes to School, has “school travel planning facilitators” dedicated to helping schools get more kids walking and cycling. For 161 students at 13 schools, walking to school doesn’t depend on the parents. Instead they are part of an official Walking School Bus offered by the Ottawa Student Transportation Authority, which operates the regular school buses for two English school boards. “The more students walk, the more (other) students want to walk,” she says. Investigate forming a schoolwide initiative through resources like the School Travel Planning Toolkit from the Safe Routes to School program.
